Discover your chronotype: why it’s key to your sleep and wellness
In 2016, sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus identified four main chronotypes (your body’s natural sleep-wake patterns). Each is represented by an animal that reflects typical sleep and activity habits. Knowing which one you are can help you optimize your sleep, boost your energy, and improve your daily routine. Let's take a look:
Bears
Bear chronotypes make up about 55 % of the population. Their sleep aligns closely with the sun; those with this cronotype wake up with daylight and wind down after sunset. If you’re a bear, you likely feel most energetic during the day and find it easy to fall asleep at night. Bears do well with a 9-to-5 schedule and usually enjoy social evenings.
Lions
Lions are the early risers, waking up before sunrise and peaking in productivity during the morning. They often feel sleepy early in the evening and may struggle with late-night social plans. If you’re a lion, you likely excel with early morning routines and are highly disciplined, conscientious, and goal-focused.
Wolves
Wolves, about 15 % of people, are the classic night owls. They tend to fall asleep late and wake up late. Their productivity peaks in the afternoon and evening hours. Most wolves might find mornings challenging. However, they thrive when working or creating late at night. Wolves often have unique, creative personalities and prefer a flexible schedule that lets them shine when others are winding down.
Dolphins
Dolphins are sensitive sleepers, often struggling with insomnia or irregular sleep. Their best energy spikes occur mid-morning to early afternoon. If you identify as a dolphin, you may find it hard to stick to a strict schedule and often wake up during the night. Dolphins benefit from calming bedtime routines and flexible schedules that reduce stress.
Knowing your chronotype is a powerful way to improve your sleep, meals, and workouts to fit your body’s natural rhythm. This insight can enhance your sleep quality, increase your energy levels, and elevate your overall well-being. So, what’s your chronotype?
